Last Saturday, as I was sitting at my kitchen table with a bowl of cereal reading the news, my phone rang. My friend Adrianna was calling to complain YET AGAIN about how she spent the third Friday in a row with her boyfriend watching the basketball game.
“I just can’t take it anymore! All our date nights have turned into me sitting around while he and his friends shout at the TV. Do they realize the players can’t hear them?”
“I’m sure it can’t be that bad.”
“It is that bad. Five beers in and they’re all screaming about how bad the point guard is. I don’t even know what that MEANS!!”
“Looks like you guys could use some new date ideas.”
I turned on my computer, and in the midst of Adrianna’s frantic speech about her all too obsessed with basketball boyfriend, I sent her a list of some new Friday night date ideas.
Plan a paint night. Take a night out on the town and hop into a shop that offers paint nights. This is an opportunity for you and your significant other to either show off your secret painting skills or bond over how your painting ended up looking more like Jerry Seinfeld than the Mona Lisa.
Escape rooms are a great date idea for couples that are up for a challenge and want to test their problem-solving skills. The two of you will have about an hour to figure out how to get outside of the room you’re trapped in together. It is a fantastic way to show your significant other that you are most definitely not fit for Survivor.
Do you love butchering the lyrics to every pop song? If yes, stop by a local pub or restaurant that offers karaoke night. If you want the date to be more intimate, rent a karaoke set, grab some wine, and do karaoke for the two of you at home. Nothing says “I love you” more than seriously damaging your partners eardrums.
Host a Game Night
Want to feel like a little kid again? Why not grab some classic board games and host a game night for the two of you. Grab some snacks for the evening and make sure to keep track of your score. Think of some prizes like a free massage or dinner for the person who wins the most games.
Sign up for a Cooking Class
Perhaps you and your significant other need to improve your cooking skills or maybe there is a new recipe you have always wanted to try? Taking a cooking class will be a tasty and romantic treat for the two of you. It will also give you the chance to channel your inner Ratatouille.
Book a Brewery Tour
Or, if you really hate beer, switch this up for a wine tour instead. This is a fun way to try some beer that the two of you have never had before and learn a bit about the brewing process. Relax, kick back and get ready to feel like real beer connoisseurs by the time the night comes to an end.
Sometimes you can get caught in a rut trying to plan a date night. But, that doesn’t mean you have to sit and listen to your boyfriend shout incomprehensible sport references or watch your girlfriend contemplate the ending of the notebook for the seventh time. Grab your significant other by the hand and drag them out to do something new for your next date!
